Yala National Park – the most visited national park in Sri Lanka has roots dating back to the1900’s when it wasfirst designated as a wildlife sanctuary. It is the second largest wildlife reserve in the country nearly 1,000 sq. kilometers in area. The park boasts a variety of animal species, across different terrains including wetland marshes, rocky terrain and aquatic habitats and is bordered by a sea-shore line along its southern perimeter. Two safaris run daily and it is advised to spend a couple of days in Yala and take full advantage of the migration patterns and get up and close to see the elusive Leopards, Asian elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears, deer, wild boar and many more mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds that are a common sight at Yala.
Udawalawe National Park is the 5th wildlife park in Sri Lanka and 3rd most visited safari park in the island. Spanning over 30,000 hectares, Udawalawe is another popular site for nature-lovers as this park is unique for its vast expanse of flatland and large reservoir which is the main reason Elephants are always spotted in large numbers at the park. As it is a dry zone the best times to visit this park is between May and September when animals gather by the reservoir for a drink.

Pinnawala in Kegalle en route to Kandy, is an elephant orphanage run by the Department of Wild-life Conservation caring for orphaned or injured elephants. Elephants are generally free to roam in the nearly 25-acre sanctuary. The feeding and elephant bathing usually happen twice a day and is the main tourist attraction.

Kalpitiya a popular destination on the west coast, is famous for its white sandy beaches and dolphin watching boat rides from November to April. Also popular amongst beach bums and tourists for the activities such as Kite surfing, Kalpitiya is unique in that, unlike beaches to the south, this destination is not overly commercialized so you get to soak in the sun and surf in relative tranquility.


The 9-peaks which make up the Knuckles ranges looks like a clenched fist and hence it gets its name. This is a UNESCO world heritage site, with over 30% of all Sri Lankas endemic flora only found in these mountain forests. Munneswaram and Manavari Hindu Templeslinks to the “Ramayana” as they were said to have been visited by the God King of India – Rama after his defeat over Ravana (great King of ancient Lanka). The Shri Bhakta Hanuman Temple, built by the Chinmaya Mission of Sri Lanka in reverence to Hanuman is the site where he searched for signs of Sita from the tops of the Ramboda hills ultimately leading to her rescue. The Seetha Amman Kovil,is the place where Sita was held captive by Ravana. Gayathri Peedam temple, an important location on the Ramayana trail, was chosen as a holy site by revelation to the Goddess Gayathri, where Ravana’s son paid homage to the Gods, Vishnu, Siva and Brahma. Divurumpola Temple, one of the most historically important locations in Sri Lanka is the place where Sita took the legendary “Agni Test”. Ravana falls and Ravana Ella caves, is famous in history for the tunnel network leading behind the water fall which is said to have been built by Ravana, where he hid Sita from been discovered by Hanuman and Rama. The Gods offered protection to Lord Rama from the wrath of Ravana when God Skanda was ordered to join the battle in Kataragama. Ussangoda is the site where King Ravana was said to have built his airport for his “Pushpaka Vimana” meaning flying chariot. In Unawatuna, Rumassala mountain is said to be part of the Himalayan mountain dropped by Hanuman when he went back to India in search of a medicinal herbs to cure Lakshmana (Lord Rama’s brother and friend) injured in the epic battle. The Seenigama Temple in Hikkaduwa is rumored to be over 1000 years old where devotees invoke the blessings of God Devol for protection and vengeance against oppressors. The last stop in Colombo on the Ramayana trail is Sri Anjaneyar Temple, which happens to be the only “Panchamuga” or five faced temple built in honour of the monkey-warrior Lord Hanuman, there are statues of different Hindu Gods in the temple, which include the Pushpaka Vimana (flying chariot) of Ravana.
