Beaches

If Sri Lanka looked drawn in white from space, it’s due to the beaches that surround the island. You can rarely travel any part of the coast for long without coming upon a simply fabulous section of sand.

Thalpe  (near Galle) – Thalpe, with its plenty of boutique guesthouses and quiet sands, is the new Unawatuna , and not a moment too soon

Marakolliya Beach  – So what if the swimming isn’t always safe ,but  for us this beach is simply stunning

Arugam Bay – Classic retreat  for surfers and anyone who likes smooth, easy vibes

Uppuveli & Nilaveli – Beautiful beaches near the old front line .The location has kept them quiet and natural

Batticaloa – Most of the coasts around here are totally isolated; for explorers, adventurers and dreamers only

Wildlife

The island may be small but the animals are big, especially the crowds of Asian elephants that live inside and outside the national parks. Leopards and water buff aloes are just some of the other creatures.

Kumana National Park – Leopards, elephants and birds galore at this park that’s much less crowded than its popular neighbour  Yala

Yala National Park  – Still drawing crowds like only a spotty big cat can, a leopard safari in Yala National Park is a Sri Lankan highlight

Minneriya National Park – Already a good place to see elephants and other animals, this park is the site of ‘the Gathering’, when over 400 pachyderms gather in an awesome show

Uda Walawe National Park  – If you’ve ever wanted to see a wild elephant, you’re unlikely to find a better place to do so than this park

Pottuvil Lagoon safaris – may bring you really close to elephants, monitor lizards and crocodiles

Polonnaruwa –  The ancient monuments here are in a luxurious park-like setting that rewards walkers ready to explore

Adam’s Peak  – On Adam’s Peak you can walk in the footsteps of the Buddha with hundreds of pilgrims

Knuckles Range  – Rain saturated and thickly vegetated, the Knuckles Range is no walk in the park, but it offers the most thrilling hiking in the country

Buddhist Temples

More than 2000 years of religious heritage can be found in the temples great and small that spot this small island. Time your visit to a festival for an surprising experience.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic  – Containing a tooth of the Buddha, this is the heart and soul of Sri Lankan Buddhism

Sri Maha Bodhi – The world’s oldest documented living tree is the focus of this very sacred site in the heart of Anuradhapura
