This famous upcountry town is situated 1868 m (6128 feet) above sea level and is in the Nuwara Eliya District.
Due to its high altitude, it has a Sub Tropical Highland climate. The average annual temperature varies between 11- 20 C The recorded lowest temperature is 0.4 C and the recorded highest temperature is 27.7 C . Monthly rainfall varies between 70-225 mm and has an average annual rainfall figure or precipitation of 1900 mm. The maximum rainfall is generally in October and the minimum rainfall is in March. The winter months are quite cold at night ,and there can even be frost. However, it rapidly warms up as the tropical sun climbs higher during the day.

The city was founded by Samuel Baker, the discoverer of Lake Albert and the explorer of the Nile in 41846. Nuwara eliya’s climate lent itself to becoming the prime sanctuary of the British civil servants and planters in Ceylon. Although the town was founded in the 19th century by the British, the who’ district is today visited by native travelers, specially during the month of April, the season of flowers, pony races, go cart races and auto rally.

Many of the buildings retain features from the colonial period such as the Queen’s Cottage,  Town Post Office and even new hotels are often built end furnished in the colonial style
