Why visit Kitulgala - Sri Lanka’s Premier White-Water Rafting Destination

Kitulgala is a small rainforest town in Sabaragamuwa Province, about 95 km east of Colombo on the banks of the Kelani River. It’s best known as Sri Lanka’s premier white-water rafting destination, with Grade 2 and Grade 3 rapids that suit both first-timers and more experienced paddlers. Surrounded by dense rainforest, Kitulgala is also a popular base for nature walks, birdwatching, and a visit to the prehistoric Belilena Cave, where some of the earliest evidence of human settlement in Sri Lanka was found.

The area is also known internationally as a filming location for David Lean’s 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai, and its mix of forest, river, and rock formations still draws adventure travelers today.
